Biowaste

Local Deployment of the Biowaste Sorting System

While the French Environmental Code does not require residents to sort their biowaste individually, it does require local authorities like SIETREM to provide a dedicated biowaste management solution as of January 1, 2024.

Between April 2023 and April 2024, SIETREM conducted a pilot program in three volunteer municipalities:
Bussy-Saint-Georges (downtown area)
Gournay-sur-Marne
Lognes (Le Village district)

Following feedback from residents and encouraging results, customised, source-sorting solutions will be progressively implemented across the syndicate’s territory starting in September 2024, tailored to each type of housing.

While waiting for solutions to be deployed in all communes, SIETREM offers several solutions for residents to compost their biowaste:

  • Individual composters for single-family homes: you’ll find all the information you need here.
  • Shared composters for collective housing: you’ll find more information here. These are free of charge.

These solutions remain in place in pilot communes until the full rollout of national measures.

Below, you’ll find collection instructions and conditions, as well as guides for each commune.

  • For individuals living in single-family homes: individual or shared composting
  • For individuals living in collective housing: biowaste collection at voluntary drop-off points (find your nearest terminal in the collection guide).

Individuals involved in voluntary drop-off or shared composting can contact SIETREM by e-mail at biodechet-sietrem@sietrem.fr to obtain a bioseau suitable for transporting compostable waste.

Buxangeorgians can dispose of their biowaste at a voluntary collection point. To obtain a bioseau for transporting biowaste, contact SIETREM by e-mail at biodechet-sietrem@sietrem.fr.

Biowaste FAQs

Can I use bags for biowaste?
Yes — but only kraft paper bags are allowed.

Can I throw compost or potting soil in the biowaste bin?
No — their low fermentable content makes them unsuitable for biogas production.

Can I put pineapple and citrus peels, chicken, beef or pork bones (large pieces) in the biowaste bin?
Pineapple and citrus peels can be disposed of without any problem. The treatment process involves a higher temperature rise than in a backyard composter, so the waste decomposes faster.
For chicken, beef and pork bones, it’s best to avoid large bones. A chicken carcass is acceptable, but beef rib bones, for example, are not recommended.

What if my biowaste bin is rejected?
A rejection sticker will be placed on the bin. It will then be collected during the next household waste round.
For voluntary drop-off points, the collection crew will forward rejected sites for fallback collection.

What if my bin’s reduction insert falls into the truck?
Contact SIETREM as soon as possible — we will replace the missing insert.

What happens to my biowaste afterwards?
For shared composters, when the harvest is complete, residents will be invited to collect compost to use in their gardens or balcony gardens.
Biowaste deposited in the bins will be sent to an agricultural methanization unit, where it will be recycled as biogas or soil fertilizer.
